When compared to other industries, manufacturers rarely lack information. It is more probable, generally speaking, they have too much information rather than not enough. Much of my past experiences in the manufacturing industry has centered around the availability of the right information at the right time for the issues at hand rather than not having the information.

Managing with metrics is one of the first rules of survival in manufacturing. To compete effectively, the creation of an objective based metric, or "Value Metric" is essential for effective performance measurements. Without continuous monitoring of value metrics, unforeseen costs, quality problems, operator variances and proficiency variations (to name just a few) will creep into any well defined processes even after the best of training. Known as a 'scoreboard,' this measurement approach can be implemented across the organization and at all levels within the organization.

Scoreboards are an effective tool to manage performance across a wide group of "communities" (teams, managers, executives, vendors, clients, warehouses, product builders...), within an organization. Each community has a different context, or frame of reference, that must be understood and maintained when meeting that community's needs. Creating these metrics and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) is one of the first steps in design and delivery of a dashboard solution that can make a difference in your organization.

Manufacturing Dashboards must be able to support root-cause analysis and assist operational managers to transform how they look at data to support continuous improvement, accountability, productivity, and operational success.
